The mosquitoes were found in Kjós, a glacial valley southwest of Reykjavik, Iceland's capital city.
For the first time, mosquitoes have been discovered in Iceland, which was the last country without these insects. After the country experienced a spring with record temperatures, mosquitoes were found in Iceland for the first time ever. According to local media reports, after using wine-soaked ropes to observe moths, insect enthusiast Bjorn Hjaltason encountered mosquitoes on several nights in October. Hjaltason detected two female mosquitoes and one male, which were later confirmed to be Culiseta annulata, one of the few species that manage to survive the winter. Iceland, which had a cold climate, was one of only two mosquito-free places in the world before the discovery. Antarctica is the only other area that has been documented as mosquito-free.
