Legends and Myths of Lake Titicaca
Sunken City: According to local legends, there is a sunken city linked to the rise of the Tiahuanaco and Inca cultures, from which their founders emerged. Viracocha: In Andean mythology, the god Viracocha emerged from the depths of Lake Titicaca to create the world; meanwhile, Mama Ocllo and Manco Cápac, the founders of the Inca Empire, appeared on a rock located on the Island of the Sun. Interpretation: These discoveries not only represent a lost city, but also demonstrate how the flooding of previously populated areas due to the lake's historical fluctuations transformed the landscape and geography of these ancient Andean civilizations. Findings and Evidence: Tiahuanaco Culture: Remains of buildings, walls, and agricultural terraces belonging to this significant Andean civilization have been discovered. Located near the lake, it existed more than 2,000 years ago. Underwater Structures: Underwater investigations have revealed not only domestic walls, foundations, and ceremonial areas of Tiahuanaco, but also those of other pre-Incan civilizations. Incan Offerings: Offering boxes belonging to the Incas have also been found, including a sealed andesite box placed centuries ago. This demonstrates the sacred relationship that existed between the Incas and the lake.
