In the heart of Rome, a medieval tower collapses during restoration work.
It's a tower-house from the medieval period, built between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Five workers were rescued by firefighters, one of them seriously injured, after two separate collapses occurred an hour and a half apart yesterday while restoration work was being carried out on the Torre dei Conti, a medieval brick building located in the center of Rome. This tower, which has now shrunk to a third of its original height, is an example of the medieval Roman tower-houses erected as residences and fortresses for noble families and ecclesiastical figures.
