In Peru, being single is a trend. The marital status listed on the National Identity Document (DNI) confirms that a growing number of Peruvians are choosing to live without a partner, and they do so for various reasons.

According to the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), there are approximately 20 million adults in Peru who are duly identified and single, representing about 70% of the population. Similarly, the Demographic and Family Health Survey (Endes), conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), reveals an increase in the proportion of women of childbearing age (15 to 49 years old) who are single, rising from 31.6% to 32.4% between 2023 and 2024. This reflects an increase in the number of young single adults who choose to live alone or who are taking longer to start a family. Therefore, 23% are between 45 and 59 years old, 13.8% are between 30 and 44 years old, and 6.3% are between 18 and 29 years old. Furthermore, 37.9% of the total population living alone has a pet; to a large extent, it is women who care for the animals, whether cats or dogs.
