Cocoa in Peru
Peruvian cocoa experienced exceptional growth in 2024. Exports of cocoa and its derivatives surpassed $1 billion for the first time in a single year, compared to nearly $1.3 billion in shipments by the end of 2024. With approximately 280,000 hectares of cocoa planted in the country and an estimated volume of 180,000 tons in 2024, Peru is positioned as a leader in quality cocoa production. Genetic Diversity 60% of the world's cocoa biodiversity (genetic material) is found in our country, and varieties from the following genetic groups are produced: Trinitario (53.3%) (Junín), Forastero (Amazonian) (37.3%) (Cusco and Ayacucho), and Criollo (northern San Martín). Producing Regions 93% of national cocoa production is concentrated in 7 of the 16 regions where the bean is grown, with San Martín being the main producing region. The main cocoa-producing regions in our country are San Martín, Junín, Ucayali, Huánuco, Cusco, and Ayacucho. In addition, there are more than 90,000 small producers nationwide dedicated to this crop.
