Coca Leaf General Description The coca leaf (Erythroxylum coca) is a plant native to the South American Andes, traditionally cultivated in Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia. This ancient plant has been used by indigenous cultures for over 4,000 years. Traditional Uses Andean communities consume the leaves by chewing (chacchado) or making infusions to combat altitude sickness, fatigue, and hunger. It also has ceremonial and spiritual significance in ancestral rituals. Properties It contains natural alkaloids such as cocaine in very low concentrations (0.5-1%). The leaves provide essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Legal Status Its traditional use is legally recognized in Bolivia and Peru, while industrial cocaine production is illegal internationally.
