An incubator designed to boost poultry production for small-scale Argentine farmers is on display.
Libre Incu is conceived as "a response from family farming to its dependence on agribusiness." The AlterMundi technology cooperative and the rural organization Comunidad, Trabajo y Organización (CTO) were responsible for its design. Its main components embody this fusion of high and low technology: Heating: An industrial heating element from a hot dog grill is used. Humidity: The system is an adaptation of a greenhouse sprinkler and a small water pump. Egg turning: A simple yet effective mechanism (of the type used for curtains) handles automatic egg turning. This combination is not contradictory; rather, it is a deliberate strategic choice. It is an act of rebellion against a market of equipment that, according to its creators, "is either very expensive or very cheap and doesn't work well."
